10 Greatest Debut Singles Of All Time

2. …Baby One More Time - Britney Spears

DUN DUN-DUN. There. That’s why.

Oh, you ungrateful hogs need more? How about changing the face of pop music and possibly pop culture as a whole in one fell swoop?. How about introducing the defining pop star of the new millennium and it’s defining songwriter? Perhaps how the introduction of coy sexuality and a relatable streak into teen pop idols provides a direct line from Britney to Christina, TLC, Rihanna, Gaga, Miley and beyond?

Or maybe it’s nothing to do with legacy. Maybe it’s how a pop song brave enough to center around how the singers lone-li-ness (beat) is kill-ing her provides the backbone of a relationship that goes far beyond “Y’all remember the 90s?!”. Sure, yer Backstreets, yer N-Syncs, yer XTINAs still shift a bunch of tickets on the nostalgia circuit, but the last five years of Britney Anne Spears’ life and public perception show our love for her runs far deeper than her TRL peers.

She’s more than a pop star, she’s a generational treasure and that comes from songs that don’t just tap your toes or generate a sing-along on a long car journey, but make you feel like the singer is revealing something of themselves that they can’t take back.

So what I’m saying is, DUN DUN-DUN. There. That’s why.
