10 Greatest Ever Depeche Mode Songs

2. Home (1997)

Home is another track from the band's underrated 1997 album, Ultra, and is the best of the band's songs fronted by chief songwriter Martin Gore. He would typically assume the responsibility of lead singer on a couple of songs per album, with the vast majority being non-single album tracks. Home, on the other hand, was far too good not to be a single. For that reason, it is a surprising yet welcome decision for Gore to take centre stage.

In typical Gore fashion, the track is a brooding, slow burner, but possesses a more positive outlook than the vast majority of the band's output. In the chorus, Gore pays homage to someone for "For bringing me here / For showing me home / For singing these tears." Whether the track is dealing with his recent battles with alcoholism is open to interpretation.

The piercing guitar finale is equally heartbreaking as it is triumphant. Coupled by the orchestral and ominous synth outro, Home stakes a claim as being the best conclusion to any Depeche Mode song.
