10 Greatest Female Hard Rock Guitarists
9. Kim Deal - Pixies
The entire rock world seemed to have lost its way at the turn of the century. Even though the world of hard rock and heavy metal had been finding its calling, the era of regular rock and roll seemed to be unaccounted for in between the squelchy synth tones that permeated the charts. While not the ideal answer to rock's prayers, the Pixies' arrival on the scene brought a fresh face in the form of Kim Deal.
When this group of misfits started to get the ball rolling off of albums like Surfer Rosa and Doolittle, Deal's presence behind a bass guitar turned her into one of the most unique presences in rock music. Instead of just annihilating your eardrums with different bits of noise, Deal's presence brought in a bit of poptimism to the group's sound, with songs like Gigantic being showcases for her kooky delivery.
Despite not even writing some of the songs, her presence on tracks like Here Comes Your Man and Where is My Mind? made them the classics that they are today. Far from being just a one trick pony, her stepping into the role of frontwoman in the '90s with the Breeders made us all remember where that indie rock sound had gone after all those years. Even though the Pixies have moved on to different waters in recent years, the loss of Deal's trademark voice and low end is something that can't be easily replaced.
