10 Greatest Final Albums In Rock
5. Double Fantasy - John Lennon
For most of the late ‘70s, John Lennon had fully retired from the music industry. In the wake of his debaucherous lost weekend, John finally returned to New York and reunited with his wife Yoko, devoting his life to making a happy family dynamic and raising his new baby Sean. After a long trip to Bermuda though, John got in touch with the songwriter he had kept under wraps.
Whereas some John albums like Plastic Ono Band were birthed from pain, Double Fantasy him finally finding some sort of inner peace, operating like a song dialogue between him and Yoko across the album. Although Yoko’s songs have always been a bit of an acquired taste, both artists sound completely happy with where life is going to take them next, as John talks about being willing to confront his controversial past on a song like Woman and the pure joy he feels from getting to his son every single day on Beautiful Boy.
This is definitely John settling into his dad rock phase, but this is the best kind of dad rock you could imagine, as he prepares to enter a new chapter in his life. While John would tragically never get to see what that next chapter would be, it’s comforting for us fans to know that he was happy at the end.
