10 Greatest Final Rock Music Albums Of The 1990s

4. Apple - Mother Love Bone

Another one-and-done record now, only this time with a much sadder story at its core.

Mother Love Bone could have been one of the defining groups of the 1990s. Their emotional song-writing, alternative take on hard rock, and the on-stage charisma of lead singer Andrew Wood ticked all the boxes. Their debut album, Apple, looked set to be the start of something special.

Unfortunately, on 19 March 1990, mere days before Apple's scheduled release date, Wood died of a heroin overdose aged just 24.

Though Apple would come out later that year to rave reviews, Wood's passing devastated the group, leading to its end. In all, Mother Love Bone were only around for about two years, but the impact they had on the industry was enormous.

Members Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament would eventually become part of Pearl Jam, after joining up with Eddie Vedder on a project called Temple of the Dog, which took its name from a Mother Love Bone lyric.

Pearl Jam, along with bands like Soundgarden and Nirvana, would shape the burgeoning grunge scene, carrying over many of the tropes that Wood had established in his short life.
