10 Greatest Final Rock Music Albums Of The 2000s

6. Third - Portishead

This list already contains a fourth album called Forth, so it only makes sense that it also contain a third album called Third.

Portishead, named after a town in Somerset, took the world by storm with the release of their 1994 debut album, Dummy, which almost singlehandedly popularised the genre of trip hop. Its follow-up, which was self-titled, was in a similar vein, but for Third, which came out in 2008, the band took on a more experimental approach.

Mixing electronic music and psychedelia with more conventional rock sounds, Third showed that the band were more than just a one-trick pony. Singer Beth Gibbons' ghostly vocals sit perfectly atop a simmering array of instruments (both real and not) that keeps listeners' attention right to the very end.

Sadly, this would prove to be it for Portishead. Though a few singles have trickled through here and there, there's been no sign of an other full album since '08.
