10 Greatest Hard Rock Guitarists Of The '70s
8. Michael Schenker - UFO
As the '70s started to get underway, most of Europe was booming with fantastic guitarists. Even though rock had been started back in the Southern part of the United States, the focus was all about the music in England once the '60s drew to a close. While people might shout the praises of other promising acts like the Rolling Stones or even Status Quo, Michael Schenker was where things started to get interesting.
Getting his start in his brother Rudy's band the Scorpions, Schenker finally found his calling when operating as the resident genius in UFO. Though he may have been the youngest of the bunch, Schenker's ability to come up with one great riff after another was unparalleled, whether it be the dominant force of Lights Out or the juggernaut behind Rock Bottom.
The expertise didn't stop at riffs though, as Schenker's playing seemed to mold borderline classical styles into the mix without having to sacrifice any of the heaviness. As opposed to the rock star attitude he radiated every time he played, the execution of every one of his solos was almost scary in its accuracy, almost like he was a machine laying down some of his classic licks. So next time you're trying to find that one riff to get you hyped, throw on Strangers in the Night and be amazed.
