10 Greatest Hard Rock Moments On Live TV

3. The Doors on Ed Sullivan

When rock was first starting to receive major airtime on cable news networks, you couldn't think of a better gig than to be on the Ed Sullivan Show. After all, this was the place where the Beatles changed history and bands like the Rolling Stones were coming up in their wake to make even more rock stars famous on the small screen. Then again, it didn't look like the producers knew what they had done when they booked the Doors.

Being the poet and general rebel that he was, Jim Morrison got a little pissed off when he heard that the producers wanted him to change the lyrics to their classic Light My Fire to omit a reference to drug use. Considering these were the guys who were known for songs that went on for 10 minutes and elongated jams, that went over about as well as you thought it would.

By the time they got to showtime, things started to go smoothly until Jim threw caution to the wind and decided to say the original line anyway, which horrified everyone behind the cameras and at home. Once they were dragged offstage, the producers claimed that they'd never play the show again. In one of the most badass moves in rock and roll history though, Jim Morrison's response was "Well, okay...we only wanted to play this place once."
