10 Greatest Hard Rock Songs Of The 1980s
4. Epic - Faith No More
For all of the different avenues that rock went in in the '80s, you could still pin down a specific genre that every band belonged to. You had Poison sitting comfy in the glam rock category, Metallica had the thrash genre covered, and Spandau Ballet were carrying on the proud tradition of crap in the soft rock genre. With Faith No More, there is pretty much no way to categorize just what the hell is going on on Epic.
Right before the alternative genre really got rolling, this was the kind of crazy idea that was just strange enough to work in the late '80s. Starting off with an entire rap verse from Mike Patton, the rest of the song gives way to a jagged metal guitar, pretty much inventing the idea of rap rock and nu metal a full decade before it even started.
And then when you have your bearings, everything gives way to a beautiful piano ballad in the outro. What's even crazier is how well all of this worked, as everything flowed into each other seamlessly and making Faith No More one of the biggest names at the time. They weren't necessarily the most radio friendly of bands at the best of times, but as far as hard rock is concerned, it takes a special artist to make a song that could win over fans of both Red Hot Chili Peppers and Metallica in one go.
