10 Greatest Hard Rock Songs Of The 1990s
6. November Rain - Guns N Roses
By the time the '90s had started, any chance of a hair metal band gracing the charts was basically a pipe dream. While the idea of someone like Winger or Warrant going the distance wasn't going to happen, the titans of the genre like Van Halen still managed to find their way into the next decade on stable footing. If hair metal was going to go out, it deserved to go out in grand fashion.
Taken from their mammoth Use Your Illusion double record, November Rain is probably the most extravagant song that Guns N Roses would ever write. The song was originally written during the days of Appetite for Destruction, but Axl Rose didn't unveil it until he had the resources to turn it into the cinematic experience that you can listen to now, complete with a full orchestral swell and epic piano parts to boot.
This is a list of hard rock songs though, and the real star of the show is that outro, which goes on for the entire back half of the song. Though Slash already had different solo spots in this song, this is where he really takes time to grandstand, with the notes sounding like pure chaos as you get pulled towards the underworld. Hair metal didn't have a prayer at this point, but this was the mic drop that left every other rock band with their mouths on the floor.
