10 Greatest Live Albums In Rock Music History

7. Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Live Seeds

The Australian goth legends have released two best-ofs in their time, both of which suffer from the common compilation trap of comprising far too obvious a set list. For those who want the finest bits of the Seeds’ first decade in one place, along with some curios for the fans, 1993’s Live Seeds is the more attractive proposition.

Recorded during Australian and European world tours, Live Seeds sees the group mid-evolution, going from the abrasive noiseniks of their nascency to the evocative and varied band they’d become. For every fire-breathing “From Her To Eternity” there’s a “Ship Song”, and the version on here is so beautifully performed as to eclipse the album cut.

There’s an emphasis on the previous year’s Henry’s Dream album, the sound of which left the band unsatisfied, and the likes of “John Finn’s Wife” and "Brother, My Cup Is Empty" really come to life performed live.

The Bad Seeds inspire quasi-religious devotion in their fans to this day, and they’re at the top of their game across this record, bringing a fantastically varied setlist and delivering it with total conviction.
