10 Greatest Live Rock Albums Since 2010
1. LCD Soundsystem - The Long Goodbye
The (then) final run of indie titans LCD Soundsystem was the hottest ticket in town, and that goes double for their Madison Square Garden swansong. The joyous farewell was a gig plenty of scenesters would lie about being at - only they don’t have to, because it’s captured so perfectly and thoroughly on this comprehensive recording.
It’s rare for an album to capture so perfectly the essence of the live experience. James Murphy’s band manages to be simultaneously indulgent and communally spirited. He stretches the songs out, with many tunes scraping the ten-minute mark, but it’s exactly what the crowd wants - to dance, to feel nostalgic, for a night not to end.
The cuts from their third and best record This Is Happening hit particularly hard, with the melancholic "I Can Change" an early highlight and the icy “You Wanted A Hit” given real aggression on stage. They bring that expansive sound to classics like “Someone Great”, the patient build placing the crowd in the palm of their hand.
The record - and the band’s career to that point - ends poignantly on "New York, I Love You But You're Bringing Me Down". Murphy pours himself into the performance. Vocally he’s seldom sounded better, and the emotion audibly overcomes him. It’s a shame in a way that this didn’t cap off their career (not least because the comeback record wasn’t very good).
