10 Greatest Metal Bassists Ever
6. Tim Commerford
In the early 90's, most hard rock was struggling to gain footing with rock being immersed in the grunge trends. Then, out of the blue, a rap rock band from California set fire to the entire rock scene.
When Rage Against the Machine first broke, the band was lauded for the magnificent innovations that Tom Morello brought to the guitar community. However, Tim Commerford's basslines were a breath of fresh air for the time. Commerford's style was always a mix between all-out metal and funk, as his breaks on "Take the Power Back" and "Bombtrack" were heavy while always remaining in the pocket with drummer Brad Wilk.
Every time you put on a Rage record, Commerford's bass tone would always cut through everything in the mix and hit you right between the eyes. There have been many instances when Tom Morello's guitar effects were the equivalent of having a DJ in the band. If that's the case, Commerford's approach to bass gave the band another guitar player, with his use of playing bass chords and nimble metal riffs giving each song extra weight. The best of metal and funk coming together to create some of the best tracks the 90's had to offer.
