10 Greatest Music Gigs You Wish You Could Have Been At

8. Jimi Hendrix - Woodstock

As one of the most compelling live performers of all times, it was inevitable that Hendrix would be on this list. Amongst several strong contenders, the most legendary is his appearance at the most iconic of music festivals, Woodstock, in 1969. With his appearance constantly pushed back as things overran, Hendrix didn't actually take the stage until the early hours of the morning, indeed many had already left by the time he started.

For those of us who missed out on this historic event, either due to circumstance or age, there is plenty of footage of the whole festival available to show what things were really like. In a stellar line-up of great artists, Hendrix was the name that stood out as the one everybody wanted to see. He didn't disappoint.

Hendrix had been performing his unique take on 'The 'Star Spangled Banner' for some time, but never better than at Woodstock, where he seemed to capture so much of the anger and anxiety that Americans were feeling about Vietnam in three minutes of sonic nirvana. Playing without the classic 'Experience' line-up, Hendrix transcended all obstacles to deliver his most memorable performance.
