10 Greatest Music Gigs You Wish You Could Have Been At

4. Nirvana - Reading Festival

This gig, from 1992 is notable for a number of reasons. It was the last time that Nirvana would perform in the UK, and their set was unusually long for the band, with a couple of very unlikely covers thrown into the mix. Appearing at Reading for the second year in a row, this is the one that everybody remembers - and wishes they'd been to, having watched the video footage.

The big difference between the two appearances was that by the time of this one, 'Nevermind' had turned Nirvana into one of the biggest bands in the world, and had signalled that the grunge scene really was the new face of credible, rebellious rock'n'roll. Moving away from the excesses of the 'hair metal' era, Nirvana spearheaded a return to basics approach in image and presentation that resonated with their core audience.

Often accused of being somewhat humourless, the band's decision to precede 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' with a burst of 'More Than A Feeling', the classic Boston song that many claimed Cobain had stolen the riff for 'Teen Spirit' from, belies that notion. Nirvana never sounded better live, a gig every fan of the late Cobain would have given anything to attend.
