10 Greatest Nu Metal Albums Of All Time
1. Korn - Korn
At the start of the '90s, nu metal really didn't have a name yet. There were some bands paving the way for what it would become like Faith No More and even the darker side of Pantera, but no one had really come forth to announce the genre's arrival. Nu metal was just an idea, and Korn were the ones who turned it into a reality.
Does this fall into all the tropes you would expect from a nu metal release?
Well... yes and no.
While Jonathan Davis voice is certainly tortured, it's not quite dialed in yet, and the riffs from Head and Munky tend to vary from one track to another.
At the same time, those little eccentricities are what help the record become even more classic, from the first drop tuned experiment on Blind to the amazing rhythms that permeate songs like Clown and Fake.
This is also one of the darkest metal albums put to tape, with Davis going in on all of his personal problems, culminating in the soul shredding tale of abuse on Daddy.
Korn may not have set out to become the pioneers of nu metal, but this one record is what every disenfranchised kid turned to when forming the foundation of the genre.
