10 Greatest Nu Metal Albums Of All Time
7. Slipknot - Slipknot
On first glance, it would appear that Slipknot is the one moment where the nu metal genre started to jump the shark. After years of bands making caricatures out of their stage persona, having these guys literally hide behind masks when they performed felt a little too cartoony for your average metalhead. It might have seemed comical on the surface, but these guys were building a tribe from the ground up.
While some might argue that records like Iowa would serve as Slipknot at their best, their self-titled debut has the most in line with the traditional nu metal tropes, from the different samples used to the hip hop flows that Corey Taylor employs on songs like Spit It Out.
The entire record might feel like it's a bit tattered around the edges, but that amateurish quality just adds an extra layer of psychotic energy to the 9's arsenal, almost like you're trapped in a mental institution and are being subjected to the chaos going on around you.
From front to back, this record is grimy, nasty, and filled to the brim with rage...like all great nu metal albums should be. Your average metalhead would take one look at a band like this and laugh, but these 9 maniacs went from jumping the shark to making you JUST THE F**K UP! from the minute this album starts.
