10 Greatest Posthumous Rock Songs
3. Real Love - The Beatles
There was pretty much no chance than any new Beatles music would be made past the start of the '80s. Though each member was still doing fine in their solo careers throughout the '70s, John Lennon's tragic murder in 1980 put a definitive end to the intrinsic connection between the Fab Four. Then as the '90s were dawning, the impossible was suddenly made into a reality.
When Yoko Ono combed through some of Lennon's old material, she found a few song fragments that she gave to the rest of the Beatles to finish off. Coming together for the Beatles Anthology TV Series and box set, the surviving Threetles ventured into the studio with Jeff Lynne to polish up the rest of Lennon's material. Whereas Free as a Bird was a real workman's job to see through, Real Love feels like a warm welcome back to the Beatles magic of the '60s.
This could have easily been a John composition, but something about the construction has that Beatles shimmer, as George Harrison offers an incredible solo and Paul McCartney lends backing vocals to his long lost writing partner. Things get even more poignant when you watch the accompanying video, with old footage of the group and Lennon's now-legendary white piano rising up to the clouds. Though the Beatles' resident eccentric had departed from this Earth years ago, all these songs needed was a little help from his friends.
