10 Greatest Queen Songs

2. Somebody To Love

Somebody To Love became iconic after George Michael stepped in as guest vocalist at the tribute concert for Freddie Mercury. It was one of the evening’s stand out performances but the original recording was just as show-stopping.

A showcase both for Mercury’s vocal prowess and the band’s signature lush harmonies, Queen were inspired by gospel choirs and Aretha Franklin to create a rich, soulful track.

Although the swelling mass of backing vocals sound like a full choir, Queen used typical studio wizardry to make the most of just three multi-tracked voices: Mercury, Brian May and Roger Taylor. As ever, bassist John Deacon sat out of vocal duties.

The track also features some typically stellar guitar from Brian May as Mercury ruminates about love, God and loneliness.
