10 Greatest Rhythm Guitarists In Rock History
8. Brad Whitford - Aerosmith
When you have two guitarists trading off in a band, there's usually the one that tends to get overshadowed. No matter how many flashy things you might want to play, it comes down to who can be the more charismatic person up front rather than how many scales you practice. If you aren't paying attention though, you can easily forget that Brad Whitford is responsible for some of the greatest Aerosmith tracks of all time.
It's easy to forget about Whitford in the story of Aerosmith, since he tends to shy away from the spotlight and lets Joe Perry do most of the talking whenever taking to the stage. Whereas Joe might be the rock and roll spirit of the group, Brad has a lot more darkness in a lot of his riffs, having been a part of some of Aerosmith's heavier hits in the early days like Nobody's Fault and Back in the Saddle.
Also, if you were to strip away all of the gimmicks behind everyone in the band, there's a good case to be made for Whitford as the more accomplished guitar player, with many publications comparing him to Jeff Beck only to give Joe Perry the credit at the end. Although you're not going to rave on about his stage presence or anything, Brad is easily the biggest secret weapon in the Bad Boys from Boston.
