10 Greatest Rock Cover Songs Of The 1980s

2. Funkytown - Pseudo Echo

Anyone who's seen the cinematic masterpiece Shrek 2 will recognise the song Funkytown by Lipps Inc., aka the song that plays when Shrek, Fiona, and Donkey enter Far Far Away for the first time.

Truly, a film moment for the ages.

Lipps Inc., who would probably like to be remembered for more than just the soundtrack to an animated movie, released the disco-tastic song in 1980. Six years later, Australian band Pseudo Echo took their own trip to Funkytown, only they brought their electric guitars with them.

Pseudo Echo injected a slice of new wave into the track. The classic hook gets punched up a gear with the use of a keytar, whilst bombastic guitar chords rage in the background. There's even a guitar solo! In a disco track!

Though not nearly as well-known as the original, this is so much fun and deserves way more credit than it actually gets. It was the band's only placement in the US top 40, which puts Funkytown in an exclusive club of songs that were the sole hits for two different acts.

Not sure if that's good or bad, but it's the truth.
