10 Greatest Rock Guitar Solos Of The 90s
3. The Unforgiven - Metallica
Everyone familiar with metal guitar has taken more than a few cheap shots at Kirk Hammett's soloing abilities. Though there have been some great moments throughout the years in terms of how well he can play, it's easy to just hide behind an absurd amount of wah and letting the chips fall where they may. When things started to get serious during the days of the Black Album, we have Bob Rock to thank for giving us one of Kirk's greatest solos ever.
When Kirk first brought in the solo for the Unforgiven, he had something that was a lot more technical than it became, until Bob told him that it wasn't good enough and that he should just cut to the chase and play what he feels. Knowing that he needed to put a little more time into this one, Kirk eventually got wound up by Bob so much that he ended up letting loose with the solo.
As it turns out, that was just what the song needed to push it that much further, digging in deep with some bluesy bends and having runs that were a lot more melodic rather than going for flash or style. While most of us point the finger at Bob Rock for helping Metallica go pop and eventually make St. Anger, every metalhead across the world owes that man a beer for making something as kickass as this.
