10 Greatest Rock Music Cover Songs Of The 1990s

1. Turn The Page - Metallica

Having become one of the biggest bands in the world in the 90s, Metallica’s final studio release of the decade was Garage Inc., a selection of covers.

The most well-known has to be their version of Whiskey in the Jar, an Irish folk song that became a rock hit when Thin Lizzy covered it in 1972. That would have made a very fine entry onto this list, but it gets enough attention already, often at this expense of this incredible version of Bob Seger's Turn the Page.

The original is a lament at the price paid by a touring musician; how constant time on the road away from loved ones can drive a person to the brink of insanity. It was given a fresh coat of paint by the Metallica lads, who play the hell out of this thing.

Hetfield’s gravelly voice sounds amazing when venomously spitting out Seger’s incredible lyrics and, since no Metallica song would be complete without one, there’s an epic guitar breakdown from Kirk Hammett to tie everything together.

Whiskey in the jar is fun, no doubt about it, but don’t sleep on this beauty.
