10 Greatest Rock Music Cover Songs Of The 1990s

3. Bring The Noise - Anthrax

Taken from their legendary second album, It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back, Bring the Noise by Public Enemy mark a huge step forward for hip-hop, bringing the group’s racial messages to the masses and shouting out a number of non-rap artists like Yoko Ono and thrash metal band Anthrax.

Clearly they were flattered, because in 1991, Anthrax decided to do Bring the Noise in their own inimitable style.

With samples of Chuck D acting as the vocals, Anthrax’s version set the song over a full-on thrash backing track, complete with crunching guitars and double bass drum action. This wasn’t either genre being watered down to fit the other, this was rock and rap meeting as equals.

This would prove to be a pivotal moment in the growing rap-rock movement, often cited as one of the first mainstream examples of the crossover genre. It led to a joint tour between both acts, where it often served as the closer, giving people a visual indication that these two musical styles did belong together.

Not only a great song, but an important one too.
