10 Greatest Rock Music Guitar Solos Of The 1990s
1. November Rain - Guns N’ Roses
Similarly to Radiohead, Guns N’ Roses included two amazing guitar solos in their 1992 song November Rain. However, with no disrespect to Jonny Greenwood, Slash blows him out of the water in this contest.
The thing about November Rain is that it’s in two halves; one is sweet and slow, the other is harsh and bitter. Each section has its own solo, which were designed to reflect these moods.
The first one feels like the notes tumble out of Slash’s guitar, gently oozing out as the top-hatted mastermind effortlessly fills the air with joy. The tone is smooth, the notes are clear, and it’s all just very lovely.
And then there’s the second one.
Backed by a mighty orchestra and Axl Rose screaming “You’re not the only one”, Slash anchors the second solo around a simple refrain, flexing his fingers in between to add to the song’s sense of dread.
Both solos are so good and both fit their respective segments so well that it’s impossible to choose between the two of them. Without either, November Rain would not be the monolith it is, and that would be a crying shame.
