10 Greatest Rock Music Guitar Solos Of The 1990s

9. Alone - Dinosaur Jr.

Dinosaur Jr. are one of those bands that people either cannot get enough of or have absolutely no idea about.

Forming in 1984 under the name of Dinosaur (it was later changed for legal reasons), the band really came into their own in the 90s, helping shape the underground rock movement with big, emotional songs and guitar tones that could make a grown man cry.

Their album Hand It Over, their final release for a decade, came out in 1997 and contains an eight-minute belter in the middle of the tracklist called Alone.

And before you ask, it’s got nothing to do with the Heart song of the same name. Sorry.

Lead singer J Mascis gives the track his best wounded dog vocals, wailing out into the night to the backdrop of a guitar being wrenched to within an inch of its life. The muddy messy solo on Alone is absolutely intoxicating, drawing you in and refusing to let go. Is it musically sound? Absolutely not, but it is raw and evocative, like all the music from this genre should be.
