10 Greatest Screams In Rock Music History
4. Given Up - Linkin Park
The mid '00s saw most of the nu metal scene in a state of transition, and Linkin Park were right in the middle of it. While Minutes to Midnight was definitely a respectable record coming off of the heights like Meteora and Hybrid Theory, there were some fans that were a bit underwhelmed, thinking that their favorite metal band suddenly started to go soft on songs like What I've Done and Shadow of the Day. If you listen to the very beginning of the record though, none of those metal chops went anywhere on Given Up.
Compared to the heavy songs on Meteora, this puts us on much safer ground, with a mean guitar riff opening things and Chester Bennington talking about feeling alone and being suffocated by his own inner thoughts. Once the bridge kicks in though, the chords feel like something straight out of a death metal song, all while Chester screams to be put out of his misery. Most of this section deserves to be on this list, but the real kicker comes at the very end, where Chester holds out a scream for over 17 seconds before going right back into another chorus.
The wild part about it is just how clean it is as well, with Chester actually still hitting a note in that screaming register and never letting up on the energy for a second. The sounds of nu metal were definitely starting to shift, but from the first song on this record, none of the anger was going to be going anywhere.
