10 Greatest Secret Weapons In Rock And Roll

3. Matt Tong - Bloc Party

Not many virtuosos of rock and roll tend to come from the world of post punk. Although we have had exceptions over the years, the progenitors of the genre like Joy Division and later New Order didn't necessarily have a penchant for blowing people's minds with outlandish scale exercises or guitar solos. Then again, maybe if we were looking for some technical chops, we were looking in the wrong place.

Arriving with the post punk revival happening at the dawn of the '00s, Matt Tong of Bloc Party gave us someone to really pay attention to in the scene these days. Although albums like Silent Alarm already had tight performances as it is, Tong was the one who really held everything together, going from disco style flair to runs that wouldn't feel that out of place on the more complex side of metal.

It really showed the minute he left Bloc Party, as he took a lot of that signature magic with him into the band Algiers, where he remains tearing up the kit with a new sense of swagger, almost dropping the post- part of post-punk altogether. As he goes from one outfit to the next, Tong's chops have still remained as delectable as ever. Strap yourself in and see what you've been missing all these years.
