10 Greatest Supergroups In Rock History

2. Cream

As the '60s just started to become themselves, we weren't really used to what the concept of a supergroup was. We already were trying to grasp the idea of a rock and roll band in practice, so bringing in an all star lineup was bound to get confusing pretty quickly. If you're looking to find the genesis of the term though, Cream is a pretty good case for ground zero.

Fresh out of his stint with the Yardbirds, Eric Clapton was in search of another group, eventually bringing in Ginger Baker from the time he sat in with John Mayall. Having a much more tribal feel to his drumming, Ginger also suggested bringing in Jack Bruce to add bass and vocals, whom he had known from his time in the jazz scene. What came together ended up being one of the more eclectic bands of the '60s, bringing with them every genre under the sun.

Across albums like Disraeli Gears, you can definitely hear the psychedelic sounds of the time, only with different musical garnishes added into the mix, like Bruce's soulful delivery or the long drawn out solos that Ginger would take live, feeling somewhere between hard rock, jazz, and absolute anarchy. Though Slowhand may have been the standout part of the band back in the day, this is one of the few instances where everybody in the band could be considered a virtuoso.
