10 Greatest Supergroups In Rock History
3. Led Zeppelin
Wait a minute...you're probably thinking how one of the greatest bands of all time ended up on a list like this. Sure, Led Zeppelin have the pedigree of some of the greatest players in the world of rock, but how are they considered a supergroup? Long before the initial magic congealed though, each of these guys were already respected among the rock community.
For as quiet as his role seems in the group, John Paul Jones had built up quite a rap sheet at the time as being one of the most in-demand session players, being the overseer of orchestral scores for acts like the Rolling Stones. On the other side of the spectrum, Robert Plant was already getting the ball rolling with the Band of Joy, whose ethereal take on rock music caught Jimmy Page's ear when it came time to choose a frontman. The initial picks behind the skins could have been amazing as well, with Keith Moon of the Who being in talks to be the original drummer before ultimately deciding against it.
Matter of fact, the only relative unknown among the band was John Bonham, who sure as hell made a strong impression from behind the kit with one of the heaviest senses of groove in rock and roll. While it took a little while for everything to fall into place, Led Zeppelin's final form is something that no rock fan is really complete without.
