10 Greatest Unplugged Rock Songs
6. Fake Plastic Trees - Radiohead
Whenever you pull out the acoustics for a song, it's usually time for your favorite artists to start getting sappy. As much as we might not like to admit it, there's a lot of angst and danger that you just can't replicate when you strip away all of the distortion. Then again, you can never take away raw pain when you turn things down.
Before Radiohead rewrote rock history on OK Computer and Kid A, Fake Plastic Trees is where they really started to tug at your heartstrings, with Thom Yorke giving one of his most passionate vocal performances.
There isn't even much to the lyrics, with Thom pointing out different artificial parts of his life that wear him out. It's pretty simple stuff, but the way that he leaves space in the arrangement makes it sink in that much more.
This isn't just talking about being bored with fake people. This is more about the hole in your heart that you'll never truly be able to fill. You can try to put as much plastic in there as possible, but it's all just a shell covering up the real pain. As much as rock is about wearing your heart on your sleeve, you might want to keep the tissues handy for this one.
