10 Greatest Vocal Performances In Classic Rock
8. Runnin With The Devil - Van Halen
When talking about the greatest frontmen in rock history, David Lee Roth seems to be a shoe-in for greatest of all time. The man had an unbeatable swagger and an impeccable aura that gave the impression that he was just one dude leading the biggest party in the world.
Aside from his onstage behavior, Roth doesn't seem to get the credit he deserves for some of his early performances, which were the perfect combination of bluesy crooner and heavy metal superstar. Much of Van Halen's debut features some of Roth's trademark power from the blast of "Atomic Punk" to the machismo of "Ain't Talkin Bout Love." However, when it comes down to Roth's spellbinding voice, it doesn't get much better than the song that first wowed us on the record: "Runnin With The Devil."
Before even getting a single lyric out, Dave's scream sends us into an absolute frenzy. As the verses begin, his voice calms down to a sound somewhere between Ozzy Osbourne's heaviness and Mick Jagger's sultry delivery. The screams were so impossible to resist that people often forget the title isn't even sung by Roth, who instead uses the chorus to showcase his trademark pipes. By staying true to his own eccentric personality, Roth turned in one of his finest performances and laid the blueprint for every glam metal frontman that followed.
