10 Greatest Vocal Performances In Classic Rock
5. Won't Get Fooled Again - The Who
At the start of the 60's Revolution, The Who seemed like any old Mod band from London's streets. Anybody could have their songs, they were just playing louder and angrier than anyone else on the scene. With Keith Moon's drums thundering away while Pete Townshend explored the world of feedback, Roger Daltrey definitely held his own as a pure rock and roll spectacle.
After the band had conquered the world with the first rock opera Tommy, Who's Next was the result of Townshend's second concept record Lifehouse falling apart. Though the vision for this new opera was never fulfilled properly, "Won't Get Fooled Again" shows just how epic a tale of that caliber could have been.
When it comes to this tune, many are quick to point out the first primary use of synthesizers and Townshend's interplay with the rest of the band, but without Daltrey's vocal, the song would collapse. The tone in his voice is so urgent that it's almost as if what he's saying could mean life or death by the song's end. And once you've heard his impassioned howl just before the outro, your world will rightfully be shaken. Striking just the right balance between harshness and tenderness, "Won't Get Fooled Again" offers the greatest screaming and singing in rock and roll history on one magical track.
