10 Greatest Vocal Performances In Classic Rock
2. Dream On - Aerosmith
There are countless singers in rock history who have adopted the fake-it-til-you-make-it mentality to their craft. While singers eventually find their voice later down the line, the early days of many rockstars seem to be dominated by imitating their idols before they hit on their own groove.
Though many have aped the tone of people like Robert Plant or Roger Daltrey, there's almost no one who could hope to touch Steven Tyler's voice. Tyler was first employed as a drummer but quickly eased his way into being upfront with his unique vocal chops. Much of Aerosmith's first album is dominated by Tyler's lower register, with him singing more in the vein of his heroes like the Yardbirds. On the other hand, "Dream On" is another animal entirely.
The first ballad section shows Tyler's more understated vocal range before the chorus explodes into premier rock and roll abandon. That initial utterance of the title already had fans on the edge of their seat, but then Tyler's voice goes up and doesn't stop until he is at the top of his (or anyone's) vocal range, shrieking away all of his worries. There are certainly some notes that feel beyond normal singers' abilities, but "Dream On" is proof that the Demon of Screamin knows no boundaries.
