10 Greatest Vocal Performances In Rock Music History
1. Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen
Any great rock frontman that has graced the stage is always going to be living in the shadow of what Freddie Mercury has already done. From the first minute that Queen stepped onstage, there was no way you were going to take your eyes off of Freddie, putting all his effort into every move he made and charisma pouring out of every pore in his body. Underneath all of the glamour of those stage lights though, there was also one of the greatest voices in rock history.
While Bohemian Rhapsody might not have been meant as an operatic piece when it was first being constructed, Freddie was going to do everything in his power to realize his vision, making an endless amount of layers of vocal overdubs on top of each other to get the sound he wanted. Even though many want to focus on the operatic section as the hardest part of the song, the true test is being able to switch through every single style that's on here, being tender on the ballad section before putting your vocal cords through their paces on the 'Galileos' to eventually getting gritty on the hard rock section of the song to bring everything home.
The end result that we hear on the final version is almost a miracle by itself, with the final master tape being almost transparent because of all the different overdubs that they put on the final track. For all of the brilliant stage moves he had night after night, Freddie was about more than just showmanship. This was a true musician, and Bohemian Rhapsody is practically the rock and roll answer to someone like Pavarotti.
