10 Greatest Vocal Performances In Rock Music History

6. Hey Jude - The Beatles

Throughout most of the Beatles' career, you never knew what vocal style Paul McCartney was going to have every time he stepped up to the microphone. For all of the Little Richard screaming that he back in the days of the band playing the Cavern, Paul always had a more versatile voice than his fellow Fabs, either trying something more throaty on Oh Darling or keeping it fairly subdued singing classic ballads like Let It Be. Hey Jude sounds like it's going to be one of those subdued songs at first, but the real star of the show is when Paul lets the animal loose on the outro.

Going longer than the actual song is accompanying, the massive singalong chorus that closes out the song is a lot more than just a couple of 'na na nas,' with Paul diving deep into his high register for some of the greatest screams of his career. This is where all of those days singing songs like Long Tall Sally really pay off, with Paul spending the better part of 3 minutes screaming his head off, ad libbing whatever lyrics he can think of in the moment while the impromptu chorus plays behind him.

These days, Paul doesn't even try to match what he did here though, electing to let the crowd sing along to the chorus during the concert and bringing things back home from behind the piano. Then again, when you've made a recording like this once in your career, you've already proven your point.
