10 Grunge Albums You Need To Hear Before You Die

8. Superfuzz Big Muff - Mudhoney

Whenever people start talking about grunge, they normally start to complain about the overcommercialization of everything. Sure, Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains might have been our bands, but why did the corporate guys in suits have to make them into the same kind of bands that jocks could get down with? If you want to call those people out real quick though, ask them what they think of Mudhoney.

Compared to the other heavyhitters on the grunge scene at the time, Mudhoney is probably the one band who always played by their own rules, if Superfuzz Bigmuff is any indication. By all accounts, this is the most concentrated form of grunge that you will every hear, with Mark Arm delivering one chaotic vocal performance after another and a low end that feels like the bass is being played from underneath a swamp.

This also contains what has got to be the closest thing to a hit that Mudhoney ever came close to with Touch Me I'm Sick, which still sounds chaotic as all hell compared to something that we would see out of someone like Bush or Smashing Pumpkins a few years later. As far as grunge's feral side is concerned, this is where the entire scene got its first real punk credentials.
