10 Grunge Songs That Are Insanely Heavy

4. Weenie Beenie - Dave Grohl

When Nirvana's career came to an abrupt end, Dave Grohl could have easily just retired from music altogether and lived the life of a hermit. Music was always a part of his soul though, and the first Foo Fighters record was a way of him slowly dealing with the loss of Kurt Cobain by trying his hand at recording his own songs. Though fans may have criticized him at the time for making music that sounded like Nirvana, not many of Cobain's songs came close to Weenie Beenie.

Ignoring the juvenile title, this is still one of the most ferocious Foo Fighters songs in their entire catalog, almost verging on straight up metal most of the time. Across all 3 minutes of this song, Dave is shrieking his lungs out, going for something in between the sounds of hardcore punk and straight up black metal. For fans, this might have been a shocker, but if you knew Dave, this was a genre that he knew all too well.

Coming from the D.C. punk scene before joining Nirvana, Dave had cut his teeth playing some of the most hard edged music he could, and would continue going back to this sound when working on projects like Probot. There are also vague hints at stoner rock on here as well, with the guitar tones sounding a lot closer to what the likes of Kyuss were doing around the same time. Dave was in for a long journey after committing to this album, but this next phase of his music career was definitely going to kick some ass.
