10 Happy Songs That Are Insanely Dark
5. Guns For Hands - 21 Pilots
Twenty One Pilots have practically made a career out of the deceptively depressing song. While each one of the band's tunes have had a cynical view of the world, the melodies they would create made them almost impossible to get out of your head. Though any of the band's songs could qualify, "Guns For Hands" may be one of the most blunt examples of this practice.
The keyboard driven riff and amazing drum performance by Josh Dun give us the impression that we're in for an absolute stomper of a track. However, once Tyler Joseph's vocals come in, you realize that you're in the middle of a very intense situation. When pressed about the meaning behind the song, Joseph said that he wrote it in response to members of the band's fanbase who had dealt with suicidal depression.
Joseph was taken aback at the fact that people were finding solitude in his songs, but the lyrics of this tune show him growing ever more worried that his fans will succumb to their depressive tendencies, with the last verse exclaiming about needing to turn these guns back into fists. By bringing attention to these darker subjects, it seems that Twenty One Pilots has shone a light on mental depression and helped many teenagers overcome struggles of their own.
