10 Hard Rock Albums Critics Were Completely Wrong About

8. Are You Experienced - Jimi Hendrix

Jimi Hendrix's debut is one of those rare moments in rock music that we may never see again. Blasting through the rest of the rock scene, Hendrix's unique songwriting approach and god-like guitar playing became the blueprint for every hard rock guitarist that was to follow. It's almost impossible to find anything wrong with this record, but the music press was actually thinking a lot differently.

As opposed to heaping this album with the praise it rightfully deserves, the response from the music critics of the time were actually mixed. Whenever you look over the reviews for this album, you will find just as many reviews that are on the fence as you will find raving reviews. While none of them tend to say anything too nasty, the general consensus coming from critics was normally boiled down "You'll either love him or hate him."

There may be a fair argument there given Hendrix's laid back vocal approach and abrasive sound, but there was a lot more to this album than anyone could have predicted. Given all the innovations this album made, it's almost understandable that the music business didn't understand it. This was music that was both of its time as well being miles ahead of everything else.
