10 Hard Rock Bands That Had To Fire Major Members

9. William Goldsmith - Foo Fighters

Looking back on the incarnation of the Foo Fighters, it's hard not to see everything as a beautiful mistake. Originally made out of a demo Dave Grohl made in a little studio next to his house, the Foos journey as one of the best post grunge acts turned them into the biggest stadium rock bands of the '00s. Though the original lineup with Pat Smear and Nate Mendel was already tight, William Goldsmith never even got the chance to play on any of the Foos' records.

Going into recording for The Colour and the Shape, Goldsmith had trouble getting his act together with Mendel, with producer Gil Norton calling them the "rhythmless section." Though things started to be shaping up towards the end of recording, Goldsmith was kept out of the loop only to find out that Grohl was actually redoing each of his drum parts behind his back.

While it would have been a low blow for any drummer to face, it's kind of hard to make your case for your own drumming style when you have a guy like Grohl at the helm. Quitting almost on the spot, Goldsmith returned to his old act Sunny Day Real Estate before Grohl found Taylor Hawkins after hearing him play with Alanis Morrissette. For as much effort as he put into the band at the outset, it was clear that a lot of Goldsmith's soul was buried in post-production.
