10 Hard Rock Bands That Totally Sold Out
5. Motley Crue
When Motley Crue first broke onto the scene in the early 80's, there was no one who could touch them. From their crazy theatrics to the offstage exploits, the band quickly cultivated a reputation for being one of the most dangerous bands on the Sunset Strip. The music was always down and dirty rock, but things started to change as the years went by.
The band went through many amazing albums until they hit on the perfect sound on Dr. Feelgood, but that success ended up haunting them. After an album with a new singer in Vince Neil's place, the band's sound turned a corner after the original lineup regrouped. The next few records saw the band playing with different styles that weren't great looks for them, starting with the industrial influenced sound of Generation Swine.
With even some band members not enjoying that record, the band floundered for years and even lost drummer Tommy Lee in the process. Once they returned, their comeback album Saints of Los Angeles seemed to have more in common with what the alt-metal bands of the 2000s were making rather than the gutter-punk anthems of the band's early days. It's understandable that the band should keep evolving, but there's a fine line between following your muse and hopping on someone else's shtick.
