10 Hard Rock Bands That Went Pop

8. Twisted Sister

When it comes to hair metal, Twisted Sister don't seem to get the credit that they deserve. While the band's makeup may look a bit cartoony by today's standards, their mix of heavy riffs along with the androgynous look was what made it safe for other hair metal bands to strut their stuff on MTV.

Though the band had a heavy beginning, it wasn't until Stay Hungry where the perfect mix of pop and rock came together, with "I Wanna Rock" and "We're Not Gonna Take It" becoming essentials of the '80s. That first taste of success set them up nicely, but what they did after that is probably best left forgotten. With most of their early material being centered around anger at the world, songwriter Dee Snider has said that he found it difficult to write angry songs after attaining his dream.

As a result, the band's later output like Love is For Suckers and Come Out and Play are a bit of a mixed bag, with the band doing everything from covering girl groups to having pop tunes featuring big names like Brian Setzer and Billy Joel. Twisted Sister may have blazed the trail for glam metal, but that doesn't get them off the hook for falling prey to the sins of the pop world.
