10 Hard Rock Cover Songs That Are Better Than The Original
9. Smokin in the Boys Room - Motley Crue
Motley Crue were not looking good by the time they got to Theater of Pain. Don't let the more glammy look fool you...this record was painful coming off of Vince Neil's manslaughter charges and a general lack of inspiration due to their more self destructive habits. While most of the record is a bunch of filler by the band's own admission, Smokin in the Boys Room is the result of the guys trying to make the best of a bad situation.
Coming off of the colossal power ballad Home Sweet Home, this version of an old slice of blues rock from Brownsville Station is a lot more than most were hoping for. As opposed to your standard rock and roll playthrough, these guys sound like the ratty kids you always you used to know in high school, never daring to get too close to for fear that they might strike.
Aside from the killer aesthetic, this is also one of the shining moments for guitarist Mick Mars, who flexes his bluesy chops with a solo played on a slide. This cover ended up being so massive that it became a staple in the Crue's live show up until the very end of the line. God knows they were doing much more than just smoking in the boys room, but as long as the hits are still this good, they can do whatever the hell they want.
