10 Hard Rock Songs That Are Impossible To Understand
7. This Is a Call - Foo Fighters
The Foo Fighters' debut record was not an easy feat to pull off by any stretch of the imagination. While the foundation of what the Foos would be were firmly in place here, the idea of Dave Grohl actually finding the strength to carry on after the disillusion of Nirvana is cause for celebration in and of itself. At the same time, making the songs make sense wasn't exactly a No. 1 priority at this stage.
Taking a page out of his old friend Kurt Cobain's playbook, much of the first Foo Fighters record's lyrics were written just a little while before they were sung, with Grohl thinking of the first words that came to mind to fill the space in between everything. Though songs like Big Me and Floaty hold up okay, This Is a Call is an incoherent mess that starts us off.
Compared to the other tracks on the album, this is almost amateurish from a lyrical perspective, with Grohl talking about the amazing virtues of magic markers, balloons, and his own secrets. For as much as the title is a great way to tie things up, the supposed call that we're making is a lot more confusing than many people would want to think about. A bold new start, just not the most cohesive poetry though.
