10 Hated Rock Albums That Are A Lot Better Than You Remember
5. The King of Limbs - Radiohead
It's hard not to look at Radiohead's The King of Limbs as a collection of ideas rather than a fully realized album. At just a handful of tracks that go virtually nowhere, fans weren't as savage to a release from these British rock gods since their debut back in the day with Pablo Honey. Although there is some great material on this record, you may just have to dig a little deeper.
Right off the bat, you can really see what they were going for here, with songs that were meant to create soundscapes and put you in a trance by their groove. While something like Little by Little may be a bit difficult for some to digest, a track like Bloom settles you into that groove from the very beginning, with a free flowing rhythmic structure and Thom Yorke sounding like a disembodied spirit above the chaos below.
There are also times when they forego the trance environment altogether, making some impressive ballads like on the track Codex. Whereas the studio might not have been the best place to put these songs, the Live From the Basement versions of these cuts bring a much-needed depth to what used to be sterile compositions. Though Radiohead had the makings of a good idea here, they wouldn't reach their full potential until they were either brought to the live stage or folded into A Moon Shaped Pool a few years later.
