10 Heaviest Metallica Songs Ever Made
9. Devil's Dance
When looking back on the catalog that Metallica have made, ReLoad probably stands as the least indicative of the group's sound. Though St. Anger and Lulu probably take the cake for that title for most fans, this is where they are at their most experimental, their most alternative, and above all their most commercial. Even if they were selling out though, a song like Devil's Dance still manages to kick a lot of ass.
Compared to the kind of snoozefests fans were accustomed to off of Load, Devil's Dance chugs along with a far greater swagger than its predecessors. Even though the worst parts of Load were shooting for something like this and just came off as slow, this is the kind of smack to the face that we wanted, picking up where the harsher side of the Black Album had left off.
From the way that James Hetfield sings the track to the way that the riff plays off the drums, the entire track almost feels like a living being, as if it's a sonic snake quietly stalking its prey before finally striking. Given that this was one of the first cuts we heard off of the record after Fuel, this was at least a good enough sign that the Metallica that we knew and loved were still there. Maybe this album won't be a total disaster, right?
