10 Heavy Metal Albums By Bands Thought Past Their Prime

4. Metallica - Death Magnetic

The tale of Metallica has been told to death, so here is the condensed version: greatest run of thrash metal albums of all time, setting the benchmark for modern heavy metal, recipient of years of slander and criticism by people who think it's really hip and cool to blindly disregard their 90s output, trash can snare, thrash metal return which is still blindly ignored because replacing the backpatches of battle jackets is too much effort.

Brash cynicism aside, Metallica's return to their thrash metal roots following a 20 year hiatus for 2008's 'Death Magnetic' was met with largely positive appraisal, both in part to their musical output, and the signs that harmony had been restored in the Met camp, with the infamous 'Some Kind of Monster' documenting the deterioration of the relationship between James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich.

With bridges mended, various health issues addressed, and A LOT of internal grievances aired, Metallica of old returned in emphatic style, securing their fifth debut at #1 on the Billboard 200 in a row, achieving 2x Platinum in sales, and set the stage for the Big Four of Thrash Tour, the 30th Anniversary collaborative shows, and eventual studio follow-up, 'Hardwired... to Self-Destruct'.
