10 Hidden Details In Legendary Rock Songs

1. Master of Puppets - Metallica

For all of the contention surrounding Metallica's discography, there aren't too many people who can find anything bad to say about Master of Puppets. Even though the Black Album may have had the bigger hits and Kill Em All may have had them at their most thrashy, this is where the band's signature brand of metal turned a corner, having songs that took you on a journey with the sheer power of their music. There's hardly any part of it that could be out of place, but the title track is actually a lot messier than you probably remember.

When the band were first tracking the song, Kirk Hammett was ready to throw down one of the best solos that he could, only to mess up about halfway through and continue on as if nothing had happened. Just before he goes into the wicked dive bomb that jumps off the speakers, Kirk said that he actually screwed up one of his phrases, saying that he accidentally pulled the string off the fretboard during the solo, which made for more than a few ugly notes when you listen to them out of context.

Kirk wasn't the only one that didn't claim to be perfect either, with the breakdown section after the soft interlude having Cliff Burton playing some wrong notes on the bass as the band get back into the heavy stuff. Then again, these guys weren't looking to make the most clean record that could ever make or anything. This was still the days of playing your heart out and giving the best that you could to every song, and in terms of raw performance, this is about as perfect as you can get.
