10 Hidden Details You Never Noticed In Rock Songs
3. Here Comes My Girl - Tom Petty
Pretty much any member of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers will tell you how hard it was making the record Damn the Torpedos. With the help of future music mogul Jimmy Iovine, a lot of the sessions for songs like Refugee were painstaking, as the band played through the song well over 100 times until they finally got it right. In doing so though, they forgot to cut out some of the strange bits of Here Comes My Girl.
On the surface, there's nothing too wrong with the track, as Petty is in fine form throughout playing off of Mike Campbell's lead guitar. As the track plods along though, we get a strange cameo from Mrs. Campbell herself, as she seems to be yelling at Mike about the sound of his guitar. When originally listening to the rough mixes, Mike was having an argument about the noise of his washing machine when his wife scolded him, which found its way onto the tape when he brought it back.
Once the band listened to it, they thought that it would be a good way to add character to the track, since the rest of the song was a lot more heartfelt than this argument. If nothing else, it's rare that we actually get a song about a girl that actually features said girl on the finished version of the song.
